Removing Inaccurate Items from Your Credit Report

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, Credit Bureaus are obligated to investigate any consumer dispute of any item on a credit report. To increase your chances of successfully removing inaccurate items, follow these simple rules:

1. Write a detailed cover letter and include the loan number or account number of the item in question.
2. Provide as much detail as possible. For example, a copy of a cancelled check, bankruptcy discharge papers or other proof. 
3. Keep copies of everything you send to any Credit Bureaus.
4. Visit the website of all three major Credit Bureaus and consider an “online dispute”.
